Excessive thick, whitish, yellow, or greenish discharge from the vagina is known as leucorrhea.

This discharge is either normal or a sign of infection. But it is not a matter of ponder because lots of Leukorrhea home remedies and treatments are available.

This discharge originates from the vagina, cervix, ovaries, or fallopian tubes.

Leukorrhea may occur in pregnancy and is considered a normal phenomenon when discharge is thin, white, and odorless.

Leukorrhea in pregnancy is due to increase blood flow to the vagina because of estrogen over stimulation.

Female infants also face leukorrhea because of their uterine exposure to estrogen. But this leukorrhea is sustained for short time.

Leukorrhea types

There are three types of leucorrhea.

  1. Physiological leukorrhea

Physiological leucorrhea is a normal condition when vaginal discharge is thin, whitish, and odorless.

It is a natural process that the vagina uses to restore or maintain normal chemical balance like estrogen and protect vaginal tissues. This physiologic leukorrhea is due to estrogen stimulation.

  • Inflammatory leukorrhea

This type of leukorrhea is caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

In inflammatory leukorrhea, the vaginal discharge is thick, yellowish, and stinky in smell.

It may also result from the congestion of vaginal mucosa or inflammation.

  • Parasitic leukorrhea

This type of leucorrhea is caused by trichomonas vaginalis, which is a protozoan. The symptoms of this leucorrhea are a burning sensation; itching, and a foul smell from discharge, and vaginal discharge is thick, white, or yellowish.

Symptoms of Leukorrhea

The common symptoms of leucorrhea include:

  • Yellowish, greenish, thick, or cheesy vaginal discharge
  • Burning and itching sensation in the urethra
  • Vagina redness
  • The stinky smell from vaginal discharge
  • Sometimes bleeding or blood spots unrelated to menses
  • Irritation and itching in the genital tract
  • The urgency of pee
  • Excessive pain during intercourse
  • Rashes around the genital area
  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Pain in the lower limbs
  • Lack of concentration
  • Sometime constipation
  • Generalized weakness and fatigue

Causes of leukorrhea

Normally vagina contains bacteria and fungi as normal flora. Different factors affect the growth of this flora such as hormone imbalance, and acid level ph.

Anything that disturbs pH or hormones may increase the overgrowth of bacteria or fungi in the vagina. Possible triggers include.

  • Contraceptive pills
  • Antibiotic use
  • Stress
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Douching
  • Tight undergarments
  • Excessive indulgence in a sexual act
  • Excessive intake of spicy, oily, and junk food
  • Smoking and alcohol use

Leukorrhea is treated with antibiotics. Before giving antibiotics first examination is required to find out the causative agents whether it is caused by bacteria, protozoan, or fungi.

These antibiotics are given either orally or vaginal creams or gel available which is used topically.

Leukorrhea Home Remedies

  • wash the vagina with neem water
  • wash the vagina with water containing lemon juice
  • take plenty of water
  • do regular exercise
  • stay away from fit and tight clothes
  • avoid tight undergarment
  • Avoid alcohol, coffee, and tea
  • Don’t take stress because it disturbs hormones balance
  • Don’t take carbs like white bread
  • Regularly wash your undergarment
  • Avoid spicy foods and misuse of antibiotics
  • Include cranberry juice, lemon, and oranges in your diet

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is considered supernatural medicine because of its innumerable medicinal effects. Aloe vera is used to treat excessive vaginal discharge, itching, and inflammation.

How to use it:

  • Prepare fresh juice of aloe vera and drink it twice a day
  • Apply the fresh pulp of aloe vera on the affected area of the vagina
  • Mix water with aloe vera gel and wash your vagina to treat inflammation and itching sensation.

Amla

It is also called Indian gooseberry and it has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibiotic properties.

How to use it:

  • Take one teaspoon of amla with one glass of water once a day
  • Make a paste of amla and apply it on the affected area twice a day

Coconut

Coconut has many medicinal properties such as antioxidant, anti-bacterial anti-inflammatory, etc.

How to use it:

  • Daily drink green coconut water
  • Directly apply coconut oil to the affected area of the vagina.
  • To get tremendous effect mix coconut water with neem and apply it to the affected area.

Walnut

Walnut leaves are the best and easiest treatment for leukorrhea because of their astringent and healing properties.

How to use it:

  • Take fresh leave of walnut in water and boil it for 20 minutes. Now remove the leave and cool the water. Wash your vagina twice a day with this water
  • Instead of fresh leaves you can also use dry leaves
